Excellent Cutting Company Steers A Course Into New Market Opportunities

The ‘Captain of the ship’, company owner Tom Schot, says their ability to innovate and solve problems for customers gives them expertise that will be valued across many different sectors.

“Wherever you need precision cutting of materials we can help. We work with our customers to come up with solutions for both their large and small cutting needs, from display graphics to building wraps,” explained Tom.

The company, based in The Netherlands, invested in a MasterCut flatbed cutter from Blackman & White to help it get the most from the 3D scanning it introduced to replace manual measurement.

The Excellent Cutting Company’s ‘Total Concept’ production method enables them to make innovative, leading-edge products from initial design to end product. The strength of the concept lies in the interaction between three machines – the 3D scanner, a bending machine, and the MasterCut cutter.

“For instance, if a signage company wanted a custom built awning, bespoke vehicle covers or a 3D display, we can build and fit them with complete accuracy,” explained Tom.

The 3D scanner gives a swift and accurate measurement of objects and spaces, and as it works through infrared it can be used in any weather.

The measurements are digitised and state-of-the-art software creates detailed cutting plans for the MasterCut, which can cut materials ranging from extremely thin to a thickness of 12cm with either a knife or laser. The table is 12m long and has a 3.2m wide cutting width.

A camera scans the material once it’s on the table prior to cutting. This is then read by the cutter software which makes any adjustments necessary to guarantee extremely high accuracy.

Different knives can be used for different materials, but the laser option was very important for the company.

“The work we do often involves materials that fray, and laser cutting stops that happening. It’s also much faster to cut with the laser,” explains Tom.

The bending machine finishes off jobs where needed with fully automated bending of bespoke frames, and materials including aluminium and steel can be bent into various shapes.

Tom feels that the investment in the MasterCut has given the company a great advantage in the graphic display and signage market.

“The flatbed cutter takes up a lot of room and not everyone will have space for it. This means we can help out other companies who don’t have the same capacity that we do.

“We also do a lot of work for local signage companies, who like to come in and see their work as it’s being cut, whether large or small.

“Really we specialise in flexibility – we can work with lots of different materials, we think with our customers, and as we are small and fast, we adapt quickly.

“Innovation is key in the fast-moving graphics industry, and as a relatively new player, we like to stay ahead of the game.”
